Please check out the latest podcast from Marc Clair and the Lions of Liberty!!!!!

In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, Felony Friday author and all-around swell chap John Odermatt returns to the show for another edition of the Felony Report! John and host Marc Clair take a look at the past month of Felony Friday articles, starting with an attempt to answer the somewhat clickbaity question “Should Big Banks Be Treated the Same as People?” John and Marc look at the a case of a harmless high school prank which has seen two teenage girls face felony charges, which prompts Marc to recount the legal troubles he had following a senior prank in high school. They then discuss John’s recent appearance on Michael Santos’ Earning Freedom podcast, and what people can learn from Michael Santos and the great work he is doing to help those facing the harsh realities of the U.S. criminal justice system. Finally, they wrap things up by looking at the looming deadline for Prop 47 petitions in California, and encourage those affected by it and their loved ones to act immediately to restore any rights lost to felony drug convictions.

Here’s another great episode from LoL:

In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, host Marc Clair welcomes in Chad Peace of the Independent Voter Project! Chad explains how, after growing up in a political family turned him away from politics, he was inspired by the presidential campaigns of Ron Paul to become a political activist. Chad would go on to be a leading figure in drafting Rand Paul to run for the U.S. Senate, and the rest, as they say, is history. Chad describes his current involvement with the Independent Voter Project and EndPartisanship.org, and how these organizations intend to change the political landscape by ending partisanship, starting with the way debates and elections favor the “Big Two” parties of the Democrats and the Republicans. After Marc disparages California’s new “Top Two” voting system, Chad sets him straight by explaining how the process actually weakens the power of the Democrats and Republicans in that state. Marc and Chad discuss what made Ron Paul so unique during his Presidential runs, and ponder the idea of whether Bernie Sanders will take any of the “Ron Paul vote” away from Rand Paul.

Business is often portrayed as being crude and cruel. According to the popular narrative — the Charles Dickens view of the world — businesses are filled with cold-hearted scrooges who value profits more than people. This is then contrasted with the kindness and altruism of charities, non-profits, and governments, which are all supposedly created to help people. Charity, in particular, is seen as ethically superior to business. After all, what could make a greater impact on the world than giving to the needy?

This view of the world is shortsighted. While it’s true that charity helps people, business makes a far greater contribution to humanity. Virtually all of the increases in society’s standard of living are because of simple commerce, and it’s the poor, in particular, who benefit the most. To understand why, we need to examine the different formulas that charities and businesses operate under.

Charities deal with distributing wealth — coordinating the transfer of some people’s “surplus” to other people’s “shortage.” Businesses, on the other hand, deal with creating wealth by selling goods and services people value. Read the rest of this entry »

Please check out the latest from LoL!!!

In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, host Marc Clair welcomes in author Nomi Prins to discuss her latest book “All the President’s Bankers”, an incredibly thorough look at the crony relationship between major banking elites and the U.S. Presidency in modern history. Ms Prins details how her early career in the banking industry exposed her to the behind the scenes machinations of bankers and politicians, and explains what drove her to dig deeper and expose the corruption. Nomi and Marc discuss the 2008 financial crisis, and how both the Bush and Obama administrations helped keep their allies in the banking industry afloat. Other topics discussed include the formation of the Federal Reserve, how banks profit from wars, the Glass-Steagall Act, and just what can be done to disrupt the never-ending crony cycle between banks and government. Be sure not to miss this revealing discussion, and stick around for Marc’s wrap-up rant!

We live in a world of massive monetary inflation and extremely low interest rates. Mortgage rates are near historic lows and yet it seems that people cannot get loans. Home sales are up, but with a near record percentage of sales made with cash, rather than a mortgage. The unemployment rate is nearing “full employment” and yet a record number of people do not have jobs.

We are repeatedly told that the unprecedented monetary stimulus by the Federal Reserve and other central banks is necessary to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and generate economic growth. The truth is that this scheme is designed to stealthily steal from the productive classes in order in enrich the unproductive financial class and the counterproductive political classes. It is a con game.

Financial Repression

With politicians and central bankers seemingly gone made with their obsession of money printing and ultralow interest rates, it is nice to know that academic economists have a term, i.e. financial repression, for the policies that have created our current economic conditions.

However, it is not a new term. Its use dates back to at least 1973 when two Stanford University economists, Edward Shaw and Ronald McKinnon, used the term in separate publications. The phrase was initially meant to criticize various policies that reduced economic growth in undeveloped countries, rather than as an indictment of the world’s leading modern economies.

Financial repression is a revolving set of policies where the government insidiously takes wealth from the private sector, and more specifically makes it easier for government to finance its debt. In today’s environment this includes: Read the rest of this entry »

In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, host Marc Clair welcomes the Rutheford Institute‘s John Whithead to discuss his newsest book, Battlefield America: The War on the American People. Mr. Whitehead explains why, less than two years after writing A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, he was compelled to write this follow-up due to the massive amount of technological advancement and increasing government overreach that has taken place in the meantime. John describes how robots may become our newest law enforcers and how digital surveillance – along with physical surveillance via drones – may serve to quell free speech. He answers the question on everyone’s mind: “Is the NSA really listening to all of our phone calls?” Expect to be blown away by the revelations revealed in this shocking episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, and stay tuned for Marc’s thoughts in the wrap-up rant!

Another great episode from Lions of Liberty!

In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, I am joined by Peter Klein, research fellow at the Mises Institute and Professor in the Division of Applied Sciences at the University of Missouri. Peter explains how he first became interested in the study of free markets, particularly as it pertains to technology and the sciences. We discuss how coercive governments have influenced the development of technology, particularly as it pertains to the internet. They look at the issue of net neutrality, and whether or not calls for it can be justified as a response to crony capitalist control over content delivery services. Peter and I examine the question of whether humans would have gone to the Moon or explore deep space if it weren’t for U.S. government intervention, and as usual Marc has some thoughts of his own in the wrap-up rant!

Charles then describes how his vociferous opposition to the Iraq War drew the ire of the executives at Clear Channel, and how sticking to his convictions affected his career. Charles and Marc then discuss the upcoming documentary “Empire of Lies”, which will look at how the Presidential runs of Ron Paul in 2008 and 2012 ignited the modern liberty movement. I am regularly asked what can be done to solve the problem of “urban blight” in places like Detroit. The question is usually asked with exhausted desperation and a shrug, as if there are no possible answers. The cause of this “blight” is the root of the problem, and when ignited by police brutality, sets off riots in cities like Ferguson and Baltimore. There are a whole range of answers that we know will work to at least improve the situation.

The root problem of urban blight is government. With this in mind I want to focus on seven areas that if you eliminate government from the scene will solve the problem, or at least reduce the scope of the problem. Some of these solutions can be easily adopted by cities; others will require state and federal governments to remove or modify various forms of intervention. Some aspects of urban blight, such as the deep-seated ideology of victimhood, are likely only to be solved — as with the problem of aging tenured professors — one funeral at a time.

1. Grant “Urban Blight Status” to Free Communities from Regulatory Dead Weight

What we need are more “real” jobs because gainfully employed people commit fewer crimes. The government creates all sorts of problems in labor markets other than the minimum wage law. City governments, or city elders, should be able to request what I’ll call “Urban Blight Status” for all of the city or parts of their city. Such status will allow for the removal of the minimum wage law and all licensing requirements. It will further remove property taxes and sales taxes. This will immediately create a competitive advantage for labor contracts in the “Urban Blight Zone.” Naturally, all of these measures are decidedly non-radical and would be considered “first steps” that should later be applied to the entire population nationwide. In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, I am joined by Dr. Mirand Sharma, an emergency room physician of over twenty years who asked to come on the show to offer a rebuttal to the recent interview with the “Science Babe”, Yvette Guinevere. First, Dr. Sharma describes how the events of 9/11/01 along with the presidential candidacy of Ron Paul helped lead him to hold libertarian ideals. Dr. Sharma then explains why he took issue with many of the statements of the Science Babe, including her stance on GMO’s and vaccines. Dr. Sharma and I discuss how crony arrangements between the FDA and CDC and companies such as Monsanto and Merck often lead to justifiable suspicion about their products, particularly when they are able to influence the regulation of their own products. Marc Clair interviews Rick Ross on cults!

In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, I welcome in cult expert and deprogramming specialist, Rick Ross of the Cult Education Institute. Rick describes how he first became entrenched in the subject of cults when he realized his grandmother was being preyed upon by a cult at her nursing home. Since then, Ross has become one of the leading specialists on cults in the United States, and has worked to “deprogram” many who have fallen under the influence of destructive cults. Rick describes the defining characteristics of cults, and how they differ from mainstream religions. Rick and I discuss the types of people who are vulnerable to cults, how cult leaders exert such a strong influence over their followers, and just how those who have fallen into a cult can be deprogrammed. In the wrap-up rant, I have some thoughts of my own on how cult-like thinking has become pervasive in many aspects of our society. I then share a personal story about my own experience with a cult.

Even as the Saudi Arabian state steps up bombing raids in Yemen and spends billions on new military infrastructure, plans are moving forward for the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah. The new tower is to be a kilometer tall and will contain at least 200 floors. It will include both a luxury hotel, class A office space, residences, and many other luxury features. It represents phase 1 of a multiphase development just north of the city of Jeddah on the Red Sea.

The Kingdom Tower project is organized by the Kingdom Holding Company, the chairman of which is Saudi Arabian Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. He is nephew of the late King Abdullah and is the wealthiest Arab in the Middle East.

The project has been in the works for several years. Between 2008 and 2013 contracts were negotiated and signed, technologies were selected and developed, and preliminary work was carried out. In early 2013 work was begun on the underground foundation and was completed in early 2014. The above-ground construction commenced in the fall of 2014 and is proceeding apace.   Read the rest of this entry »

Ilana explains the problem she has with many anarchists who denounce any involvement in government or politics, preferring to live in the “sin of abstraction.” Ilana and I explore the ideas surrounding what justice should be in a free society, the problem with competing theories of justice, and how “personalized justice” can actually result in injustice. In this episode of the Lions of Liberty Podcast, I welcome in Michael Minardi, a criminal defense attorney based out of Florida who specializes in defending clients against prosecution for using cannabis for medical purposes. Michael describes how he first began to see the hypocrisy in drug laws and their enforcement as a teenager, and how that led him to pursue a career in defending people against drug prosecutions. Michael and I discuss the case of Jesse Teplicki, who Michael successfully defended in court after he was arrested for growing marijuana at his home in order to aid him in dealing with his anorexia nervosa. Michael explains the federal government’s hypocrisy on medical cannabis, the hostility faced from judges and prosecutors for defending medical cannabis patients, and why he feels the jury’s decision to acquit Jesse Teplicki is not a case of jury nullification. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the American “civil War,” more accurately described as the War to Prevent Southern Independence.  It is also the 31st anniversary of the movie, The Godfather, Part II.  A single scene in the movie illustrates the true cause of the “Civil War.”

The scene in question involves a Hells Kitchen New York Mafia boss in the early twentieth century named Don Fanucci, whose character is based on a real-life Mafia boss named Ignazio Lupo (“Lupo the Wolf”).  In the scene Don Fanucci meets with a young Vito Corleone (who would later become “The Godfather”) after discovering that young Vito and some friends had been quite successful operating as thieves in the neighborhood.  The purpose of the meeting was to extort money from the young Mafia wannabes since that, after all, was a big part of the “business” the Mafia was in at the time.  Don Fanucci (and Ignazio Lupo) would go to all business people in Hell’s Kitchen and essentially say, “If you want to do business in ‘my’ neighborhood, you’ll have to give me a percentage – or else.”  (Ignazio Lupo meant business; he is “credited” with at least 60 murders).  Here is what Don Fannucci said to Vito Corleone, from the script of The Godfather, Part II:   Read the rest of this entry »
